BugZoo is an outreach and education program at Oregon State University. We make on and off-campus presentations to K-12 students and the general public. Outreach events are done by volunteers that have experience with insects and youth education. Many of them are college students who are studying Entomology.
“Motivating more young people to take an interest in understanding and learning science at school is important not only because science careers are exciting and rewarding, but also because young people need to know about how science and technology is changing our world – their world!” – Stephen Parker
Some impacts of our outreach include:
-
Interactive, hands-on learning
-
Introduction to entomology as a life science
-
Age-appropriate lessons including: life cycles, pollination, insect communication, etc.
-
Fostering interest in higher education
As a youth-serving program, we work closely with the Office of Precollege Programs to ensure that outreach events are a safe and educational experience for all participants.
In just 2.5 years, we delivered over 90K contact hours of community programming.
