OUTREACH EDUCATION

OSAC TOURS   BUG ZOO  WORKSHOPS  FEATURED OUTREACH EVENT  PHOTO STORY

Outreach education is the dissemination of information to the public. One of the goals listed in the Mission Statement of the Entomology Program is to provide current and objective information to the citizens of Oregon. Overall, scientific literacy in the United States is weak, and literacy about insects is even weaker. The aforementioned fact coupled with another fact - insects are interesting - leads us to believe that ....

"... Entomological information deserves to be shared with the public"

As a whole we are very active in presenting public seminars and workshops locally, regionally, and nationally.

For instance, since January of 2008 OSU Entomologists have interacted with:

  • The Lepidopterists Society of Ohio
  • North American Butterfly Association Eugene-Springfield Chapter
  • Hoover Elementary Corvallis, OR
  • Oregon Hardy Plant Society
  • Polk County Master Gardeners
  • Benton County Master Gardeners
  • Marion County Master Gardeners
  • Douglas County Master Gardeners

EXTENSION

Several Extension Entomologists at OSU participate in public outreach events and various training workshops.

Such events include:

  • October Pests at the North Willamette Research Station
  • Insect ID Table at the Benton County Plant Sale
  • Oregon Hardy Plant Society Native Plants Conference
  • The Oregon Entomological Society’s Dragonfly Biology and Identification Workshop
  • The Oregon Entomological Society’s Ground Beetles of the PNW Workshop
